New Blog

I have moved this blog to a new url with a new template. Eventually I will close this one.

Somehow, I couldn't get the new html to show, very frustrating, so I had to start from scratch.

The new blog is Astray in Latin America 1, click to go there.

In the beginning...

Aerolineas Argentinas 747-100 photo courtesy: Ralph Kunadt

I flew out of Auckland International Airport on 26th August, 1992 bound for Madrid in Spain. Next stop Buenos Aires, Argentina, 9 hours & 50 minutes flying time.

Well, that's what my ticket said.
It was the day before my daughter's 17th birthday. I had decided to spread my wings. I was bound for Europe to spend a year traveling.

I was 40 years old, my 41st birthday was the next Saturday.
My ticket was a return, 1 year validity, with a stopover in either Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro.

I chose the latter. Ten days in Rio....

The story starts.

Starting from today

This is Chuquicamata Copper Mine in northern Chile, not far from Calama. It is the biggest hole that man has dug into the planet. Measuring 2 x 3kms, it is 810m deep.

Starting from today, I am beginning at the beginning. My South American odyssey.

How I got here...

Why I came here...

Where have I been...

Who have I been with...

Which is my favourite country...

When did I get here...

All this and more will become apparent over the next posts.

Come with me on the journey o f a life time.
